The namibian airspace is generally defined in NAMCARS Part 172.

During the competition season, certian changes in airspace layout take effect.

These agreements are subject to approval by the NCAA. However, discussions about structure, size, etc. have been finished. We are now putting the conclusion on paper and what is being made public here has already been sent to the NCAA.

Please take a very good look at the new airspace structure, it offers new possibilities, i.e. the ability to fly in the whole country below FL145, but also holds a few new challenges.

The airspace, former known as “Kiripotip sector” is gone. In its place, there will be the RMZ/TMZ Kiripotip, which is of no real significance for gliders equipped with Transponders.

All RMZ/TMZ may be penetrated, whilst squaking “2000” or by establishing radio contact with ATC.
It is very important to have clear ways of communication, therefor beeping varios and loud vents are not helping at all.

1       Definition

1.1     Transponder Mandatory Zone (TMZ)

If an aircraft is capable of operating a pressure reporting transponder (Mode C) continuously without interruption, the aircraft may operate in these areas without making the required position reports or initial calls, provided the transponder is operational. Transponder squawk 2000 (VFR).

The PIC is to ensure that the transponder is selected on with altitude at all times whilst within the TMZ, once outside of the TMZ the PIC will follow procedures as stipulated in the AIP.

Aircraft without a pressure reporting transponder (Mode C) have to avoid this airspace.

1.2     Radio Mandatory Zone (RMZ)

In a Radio Mandatory Zone (RMZ) Pilots are required to make position reports on entering these sectors to ATC on 127.4MHz and again when leaving or at other intervals as defined by the controller.

The PIC of the non-transponder equipped glider is to advise ATC on 124.7MHz of their position (Radial/DME from WHV), Flight Level and the direction which they are flying. Once clear of the designated RMZ, vertical or horizontal, as applicable, the PIC is to advice ATC of their current position (Radial/DME from WHV) and current passing level (climbing or descending as applicable).

All radio transmissions will follow the published Radio procedures as stated in the ATS Procedures part in the MOU (Memorandum of Understanding).

1.3     Competition Season

The Competition Season means the time when a lot of glider pilots from around the world visiting Namibia and flying from the designated gliding centers personal, African or World- Records.

The competition season runs from 01. November to 28 February of the following year

1.4     Special Gliding Area

A predefined airspace sector of lateral and vertical dimensions as published in the Namibia Integrated Aeronautical Publications or amended via NOTAM or AIP Supplement

Air space Classifications:

The airspace has been classified Class G airspace for the entire vertical plane from GND to FL 195.

 

2       Airspace below FL 145

Gliders operating in airspace G in the FYWH FIR shall comply with all regular ATS procedures applicable for the airspace.

The airspace Caprivi Strip has been delegated to Botswana. See: AIP ENR 2.2-1 1.2

The airspace G includes the South Africa Zipfel as described in the AIP ENR 2.2-1 1.3.

The airspace between the southern FIR Windhoek border and the Namibian border is under the jurisdiction of South Africa and therefore responsibility for the control and operation of that airspace is handled by South Africa.

TIBA procedures on 124,8MHZ will be applicable between GND and 1500FT AGL within the Windhoek FIR

Above 1500FT AGL contact Windhoek Flight Information Service on 123.8MHZ while in the FYWH FIR Area South and contact Windhoek Flight Information Service on 129.6MHZ while in the FYWH FIR Area North. (See ENR 2.2-1 Traffic Information Broadcast by Aircraft TIBA).

Pilots are reminded that outside Class G airspace is designated up to FL145 only and nil VFR flights are permitted in Class A Airspace.

Namibia Airspace below FL 145

2.1     RMZ/TMZ Kiripotib

A RMZ/TMZ will be established between the Windhoek TMA–C (50nm WHV) and 60nm WHV with borders Radial 155 VOR WHV in the East and Radial 205 VOR WHV in the West. FL100 up to FL145.

Operation an aircraft/glider in this area should made according to point 1.1 or 1.2.

3       Airspace between FL 145 and FL 195

3.1     Competition Season

During the Competition Season, from 01 November  to 28 February of the following year, a Special Gliding Area will be established, as already defined in the AIP ENR 5.5-1.

3.2     RMZ/TMZ Pokweni

A RMZ/TMZ will be established between a circle of 60nm WHV (Border of the Special Gliding Area) and 80nm WHV with borders Radial 155 VOR WHV in the East and Radial 205 VOR WHV in the West. FL145 up to FL195.

Operation an aircraft/glider in this area should made according to point 1.1 or 1.2.

3.3     RMZ/TMZ Walvis Bay

A RMZ/TMZ will be established between a circle of 70nm WBV and 80nm WBV with borders of the Special Gliding Area. FL145 up to FL195.

A RMZ/TMZ will be established between a circle of 45nm of the reference point of the Aerodrome and with borders of the Special Gliding Area. FL145 up to FL195.

Operation an aircraft/glider in this area should made according to point 1.1 or 1.2.
